AWOL Riot Scene Extras

Posted: July 31, 2011 in AWOL

Several extras from the AWOL riot scene in Ypsilanti have asked me to post my pictures. Here they are!

The lovely Teresa Palmer signing autographs for fans on the set of AWOL in Ypsilanti.

The super cute and really nice Aimee Teegarden.

Both Teresa and Aimee went out of their way to interact with the fans waiting. We’re not naming names of those who were far less willing to do so. I know it must be tough to be a celebrity (ha!), but a ‘crowd’ of 5 or 6 people isn’t really that intimidating. Be nice, it doesn’t cost anything.

P.S. Security were great too. Movie stalkers always appreciate that!

Liam Hemsworth was happy to pose for photographs with fans on the set of AWOL in Ypsilanti last night. Hope my new movie-stalking friends don’t mind me posting this picture for all of the 23 people who read this blog to see!

The storms of earlier in the week had moved on, and filming of the AWOL street riot scenes started again in downtown Ypsilanti last night.  The street was blocked by 2 old buses at Michigan Ave, and filming went on all evening through to the early morning.

Just an average night in Ypsilanti — random gunfire, barricades of trashed furniture, and angry crowds. It was a little strange that the angry crowds, carrying banners and in very groovy 1970s outfits, were entirely silent in their rioting. I guess they add the sound later.

Security was, I’m told, a little tighter than usual around the set due to the presence of a certain teen celebrity who may be dating one of the cast. However, I still managed to get some shots of Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer and Aimee Teegarden. Will post these later.

A side street in Ypsilanti tonight was set up for a street riot, AWOL style. 1960s and 70s vehicles, a barricade of broken furniture, and nothing at all happening. The huge line of storms on the radar had caused the postponement of the riot scene until tomorrow and/or next Monday.  @DelvonRoe10 had tweeted the night before that shooting had to be stopped due to rain. That’s Michigan weather.

Hey, I think I saw that Detroit Police car in Freaky Deaky! I wish you could see the shine on that Plymouth. Hard to believe a car that clean could exist in the middle of a street riot.

Is that an IKEA couch I see in that barricade?

Groovy.

When these prices went up on Gas Buddy, motorists started queuing at theI94/Huron St exit!

Yesterday Teresa Palmer and Liam Hemsworth were filming right on Michigan Ave in downtown Ypsilanti in a diner made to look like early 1970s Michigan, with appropriately attired extras. I have to say that most inhabitants of Ann Arbor could be used in the movie with little wardrobe adjustment! Though there are a lot less placards carried these days, and I doubt that many wander the street carrying a tamborine–apparently that was a required accessory back then. Gotta love the ‘fros.

AWOL was filming yesterday in a diner on Michigan Ave.  More photos to follow, but for now here’s a teaser of Liam Hemsworth and Teresa Palmer on set.

Freaky Deaky

Posted: July 26, 2011 in Freaky Deaky

Back to the 1970s! Freaky Deaky, based on the novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard is currently being filmed around Detroit. Set in Detroit, 60s radicals turn to blackmail and mayhem. There are a lot of 1970s cars driving around town from movie set to movie set showing off their period fenders.

Some pictures from the set in Palmer Woods, Detroit. Billy Burke is hiding in there, and also the back of Roger Bart’s head. Great shots, huh?

Crime tape. Cool cars.

The good news is “nowhere yet.”  At least it doesn’t feel that way this Summer. If you want to be a movie extra in the Detroit area there are casting calls almost every day, base-camps are springing up all over town, and there’s still that movie vibe going on. Of course, you might not want to read any news about The Dark Knight Rises, or The Avengers, the two HUGE movies which were rumored to have abandoned their plans to film in Michigan this Summer due to uncertainty about the Film Incentives. OMG, how much fun would it have been to have The Avengers filmed in town? Thanks, Governor Snyder. Some of the movies currently filming were approved before the absurd $25 million cap, others are frankly, small movies, and don’t have the Big Movie feel of last Summer.

It’s great to have the small movies being filmed here, but it’s clear that the small independent movies aren’t going to bring in the Big Bucks that will help build the industry and keep young, talented people in the state. $25 million is a crazy low cap. Insane. My hope is that at some point sanity will prevail, that the real information will get out there, and people with influence will force a change and increase the cap to a more reasonable level that wouldn’t be used up on one big movie. Like Oz: The Great and Powerful currently filming in Pontiac.

So what is filming right now?

Have a little Faith just wrapped. Based on the #1 bestselling book by Mitch Albom, starring Martin Landau and Laurence Fishburne, was filmed mainly where it was set, in downtown Detroit.

Freaky DeakyCharles Matthau’s upcoming adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel is still filming in Detroit at locations downtown and Harper Woods. The cast seems to change by the day, but currently stars Christian Slater, Billy Burke and Crispin Glover.

AWOL, has the younger celeb-spotters in a frenzy down in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Based on a true story, Austin Stowell stars as a young soldier in Vietnam who gets dumped by his hometown girl (Aimee Teegarden). Liam Hemsworth plays his best friend who joins him in going AWOL. Together, they return to the States to win her back. Liam brings with him to set his on-off girlfriend, Miley!

Oz: The Great and Powerful  Is this the last Big Movie to be filmed in Michigan? Hope not. Filming has started at Raleigh Michigan Studios in Pontiac, the Disney prequel boasting stars James Franco, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams. Big Names. Big Budget. Thousands of extras needed.

It’s been a hot Summer so far, movie-stalking has mostly been abandoned in favor of air conditioning, but I’ll be updating with some pictures soon. Watch this space.
